This photographic series documents Frankie 'Tango' Lane senior Mayali man, cultural custodian, and founding member of Djilpin Arts as he journeys through the bushland of Wugularr in search of the perfect tree to create a Mago, the traditional West Arnhem didjeridu. Formerly known as Beswick, Wugularr is a place of deep cultural significance for the Jawoyn people. In 2024, the community reclaimed its Jawoyn name, honouring ancestral connections to Country. This is where Tango has spent his life. His story is not one of spectacle but of patience, knowledge, and continuity a quiet resistance through practice. From the moment he steps off the Central Arnhem Highway, axe in hand, Tango becomes part of the landscape. His eyes scan bark and canopy with a precision born of decades. Each image reveals not just an action, but a ritual: inspecting, cutting, peeling, shaping. His worn hands, captured in close detail, speak of generations. The bark he strips is more than material; it’s memory. The Mago is a sacred object, not merely a musical instrument. It carries songlines, ceremony, and story. Tango learned from great masters like David Blanasi and now continues that lineage harvesting, hollowing, and finally, painting with the grass brush in the old way. His designs also seen in bronze, canvas, and textile honour tradition while speaking to contemporary artforms. As the final strokes of ochre and white dance across the Mago’s surface, we witness not just the creation of an object, but the continuation of a people’s voice. In the stillness of the studio, his gaze sharpens focused not on the camera, but the path of the brush, the echo of ancestors. This series, grounded in the sun-drenched woodlands of Wugularr, is more than portraiture. It is a document of cultural preservation, of Indigenous sovereignty through making. Frankie 'Tango' Lane does not merely craft Mago he channels Country, story, and song. A pristine, charming and surreal hill station, also known as mini Tibet in India, is home to Tibetans and also the seat of exiled Tibetan government. The small town is unlike any other Indian city or hill station: monks and young children in red robes as well as elderly with their prayer beads are seen walking the hilly streets and laneways. The Kirti monastery is just one of many located in Dharamsala and was founded in 1992 by Kirti Rinpoche to house exiled Tibetan monks. Today, the monastery has over 200 residents. The Kirti Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism follows the Gelug school of Buddhism of the Dalai Lama. The young boys at Kirti monastery leave home at an early age often not seeing their parents for long periods of time. Living in the Monastery they dedicate their time to studies and gain religious merit on the road to becoming monks. Their culture and way of life is Tibetan in almost every sense however cultural aspects of their adopted county are also present at times. As the 2023 Cricket World Cup gets underway in India the picturesque town of Dharamshala is host to five games including a highly sort after match hosting the India Cricket Team. Cricket in India is supported and followed by all walks of life at fanatical levels. When the young boys of Kirti monastery have some recreational time between their studies that they try their hand at cricket. Set on a high mountain top with views over the valley below the boys play a makeshift game of cricket. They share the bat around taking turns trying to hit the ball as far as they can. This rally was held in Melbourne during the COVID-19 global pandemic and almost all protestors were wearing face masks. The challenge of photographing this event was trying capture the emotion. So much is captured in a persons face and with masks that was difficult. After years of practice, Palestinians in Gaza can tell the difference between the sound of fighter jets and the sound of rockets. As the tea is poured and the family’s suspiciousness of this new Western interloper subsides, Wael tells me his story about Operation Protective Edge. It is not the story of the thousands of Palestinians killed or Israelis injured, of a mission to destroy the Hamas tunnels and secure Israeli territory from rocket attack. In contrast to the other centres of camp administration where men sit idly smoking, chatting and drinking coffee, the matronly Jordanian gynecologist Dr Reema oversees a tight ship. As the camp has grown, the clinic has responded to the needs of its patients. Likewise, about five months ago, the clinic began to provide family planning consultations to women in private rooms and last year began making home visits. The innovations have led to a dramatic increase in the number of ladies accepting IUDs and condoms as ways of family planning. They could not stay in Syria and their escape route through Jordan was barred. Abu Eyad appealed to the Free Syrian Army operating in southern Syria to supply them with Syrian ID cards. He is with his grandfather, as Wael cannot drive to accompany him. It’s unclear whether these are tears of happiness or borne out of a brief moment of weakness and realisation regarding their lot in life, which is now the lot of a new human being too. There are only two ways into or out of the TRNC. Southward, one can cross the Green Line, enter the RoC (Republic of Cyprus) and take a plane (or ferry) anywhere. Northward, one can fly (or ferry) to Turkey and travel onward from there. But Hilda cannot go South. The RoC refuses her entry because it considers her a hostile settler. Neither can she go North. He describes his family as normal people living a normal life. However, in 2014 that life would change. The area was deemed to be a military zone. They moved to Khan Yunis and sought refuge with thousands of other displaced people in a UN school. Without the simplest of amenities, such as water, their family would have to wash at a nearby hospital. To make more livable space the family completed some makeshift additions. After the first few months the floors in these houses would rot and collapse leaving gapping holes. Keeping warm would become a big problem Rebuilding is difficult as the materials needed are not readably available in Gaza. Fada remains stoic while recounting the horror of this time. She maintains eye contact with me while speaking through the interpreter. Hosna finds it more difficult and pleads for help as she breaks down while telling her story. The emotional and physical strain for this 75 year old is terribly confronting. Mouldy bread sits on the floor as a last resort for food when the situation gets tough. In a last pitch of desperation Hosna finishes our conversation saying, “there is no hope for us, death is better than this life” Not all of Gaza lives like this. Not everybody has substantial wounds related to rocket attacks or lives in makeshift shelters, however all Gaza’s civilians have suffered in some way.
